Sun, shade and the Fremantle Doctor: aspect analysis south of the equator
North-facing gets the sun here, west-facing walls will cook you and your plants, and the afternoon sea breeze is a design element you can plan for. Map the sun through the year and the wind through the day.
Almost everything a northern-hemisphere gardening book or a US YouTube channel tells you about aspect is backwards here. North-facing is the sunny side. South-facing is the cold, shaded side. If you have been quietly puzzled about why the “full sun” bed you copied from somewhere keeps failing, that is usually the reason.
Perth adds two complications on top of the hemisphere flip. The February sun is nearly overhead at midday and then low, side-on and very hot from the west at five o’clock. At roughly that same hour a strong sea breeze arrives from the south-west. The two come from nearly the same direction, which is the central tension in laying out a Perth back garden: the wall that shades you also blocks the only free cooling you get.
Why a professional does this before drawing anything
Because the client is describing the season they are standing in. Walk a garden in August and everyone tells you the back corner is lovely. Stand in the same corner at 4pm on a 39-degree February afternoon and it is unusable. Take the August description at face value, put the seating there, and the clients quietly stop using their garden about fourteen months after handover.
So a professional fixes true north on the base plan before anything else is drawn, records shade with dated photographs rather than memory, runs the sun angles for the actual latitude instead of guessing, and looks north over the fence at what could be built there — a two-storey addition on your northern neighbour is the single most expensive thing that can happen to a Perth garden.
On a renovation you are also inheriting shade you did not design. Some of it is a thirty-year-old asset you could not buy: a mature jacaranda shading a west wall is worth more than anything you can build. Some of it is a Chinese tallow in the wrong place, shading your only north-facing bed. Sorting one from the other is what the tree assessment lesson is for.
Perth’s sun angles, and what they do to shadows
Perth sits at about 32° south. That fixes the geometry. At solar noon the sun is always due north, at these altitudes:

That winter row is the one people get wrong. A standard 1.8 m colorbond fence on the northern boundary throws two and a half metres of shade across your garden at midday in June — the exact time of year and the exact strip of ground where you most want sun. Double it for a two-storey wall.
The rising and setting points move a long way too. In December the sun rises about 25° south of east and sets about 25° south of west, over roughly 14 hours 15 minutes of daylight. In June it rises and sets about 28° north of due east/west, in about 10 hours. The consequence that matters: in summer the sun swings around behind a west-facing wall and keeps hitting it until sunset, low and side-on, where eaves and pergola roofs cannot intercept it.
Two local timing quirks. Perth sits about 4° west of the 120°E meridian that sets Australian Western Standard Time, so solar noon here lands around 12:15pm and drifts roughly a quarter of an hour either side through the year — midday on your watch is not when the sun is due north. Get the real time from the Geoscience Australia calculator. And WA does not observe daylight saving, so unlike the eastern states your 3pm shadows in January and July are directly comparable.
Mapping the shade you actually have
Print two copies of your base plan. Then, on a clear day:
- 9am, noon and 3pm. Walk the edge of every shaded area and sketch it straight onto the plan, one colour per time. Photograph from three fixed positions — a patio corner, the back fence, the kitchen window — standing in exactly the same spot each round.
- Correct for the season you are not in. Winter noon shadows at this latitude are roughly nine times longer than summer noon shadows. Anything that shades you in December will shade far more of the block in June; anything clear in June is clear all year. Use SunCalc on your aerial photo to sanity check the December and June arcs before you commit.
- Diarise a repeat near the opposite solstice. It takes fifteen minutes and it is the only way to catch what you guessed wrong.
The western wall problem
Mark every west-facing and north-west-facing hard surface on the plan: rendered walls, limestone retaining, colorbond, light-coloured paving, the pool fence, the shed. In January these take direct sun from about 3pm to sunset after 7pm at a low angle, then radiate it back into the garden well into the evening. Surface temperatures run far above air temperature, and a plant 250 mm off a hot rendered wall is in a different climate to one two metres away.
This is why a Perth garden dies in patches rather than evenly. The strip of lawn along the western fence goes first, and people respond by watering harder, which does not help because the problem is radiant heat rather than soil moisture — a distinction the hydrozoning lesson picks up later.
The Doctor is a design element, not weather
The sea breeze is the reason a Perth evening is bearable. It sets in during the afternoon from the west-south-west, backs to the south-west at full strength, and pushes inland to the Darling Scarp. It is most reliable in December and January and fades through late summer.
Walk your block and answer one question: where does it get in, and what stops it? Usually the answer is a solid boundary fence, a dense hedge, or the neighbour’s garage on the south-west corner. The tempting fix for the western sun — a solid 2.4 m screen wall — is also the thing that kills the breeze, and you end up with a hot, still courtyard.
Separate the two jobs. Shade with something overhead and permeable — a pergola, a deciduous canopy, a shade sail. Screen with something air moves through: slats at 40–50% open, trellis, a pleached row lifted 1.8 m. Josh Byrne’s Fremantle house does exactly this: the project’s sustainability summary calls for “maximum glazing to the north for winter solar gain (shaded in summer) and minimal glazing to the east and west”, and the outdoor shading is delivered by grape-vine pergolas and shade sails rather than by walls.
Winter is the opposite problem. Perth’s rain arrives with cold fronts off the Indian Ocean and the wind that flattens things comes from the north-west quarter. Watch two or three fronts through June and note which way the gates slam and which corner collects the rubbish. That is your winter exposure, and it decides where a shade sail will tear out.
Heat traps and frost pockets
A heat trap is an enclosure facing between north and west, floored in light paving, with no air movement through it — classically the paved north-west corner between a Perth house and a colorbond side fence. Mark them. They are unusable as they stand in summer, and they are also the best winter position on the block, which makes them worth solving rather than abandoning.
Frost matters less here than most references suggest; coastal and inner suburbs essentially do not get it. The hills, the Swan Valley and the outer eastern fringe do get radiation frosts on still, clear winter nights, and cold air behaves like water — it flows downhill and pools behind anything solid. East of the scarp, the low corner behind a solid wall is where frost sits, which makes it the wrong place for frangipani or young citrus. A gap at the base of that fence lets it drain.
What this changes downstream

- Shade at 9am / noon / 3pm → plant palette and lawn extent
- Hot surfaces and heat traps → screening, overhead structure, irrigation zoning
- Breeze in, storm wind in → solid or permeable boundary treatments
