Irrigation 6 — Mainline, valves, solenoids and wiring

Pipe sizing and material, the mainline route, valve boxes you can actually get to, solenoid wiring and the common wire, and backflow prevention — which is a legal requirement, not an optional extra.

Everything in the first five irrigation lessons happened on paper. This one gets buried. If the mainline runs where the alfresco slab is going, or the valves end up under 90 square metres of limestone paving, you will not find out for two years — and then it costs four figures to find out. A legal line also runs through this lesson, so it goes first: part of this work is not yours to do, and it is the part that protects the drinking water supply.

Where the licensed trade starts and stops

Regulation 4 of the Plumbers Licensing and Plumbing Standards Regulations 2000 defines water supply plumbing work as supplying water from a water supply system to a point of discharge — and for an irrigation service it defines that point of discharge as including the outlet of the backflow prevention device required under the plumbing standards. That draws the line precisely.

Unlicensed plumbing work carries a $5,000 fine under regulation 9(1), and the list of plumbing work a WA homeowner may legally do on their own home is five items long — shower head, tap repair, cistern washer, filter cartridge, plunger. Retic cut-ins are not on it.

In Perth the trade calls this job a retic cut-in: the plumber exposes the copper service downstream of your meter, cuts in a tee, and brings up a stub fitted with an isolating ball valve and a dual check valve. Book it early. It typically sits two to three weeks out in a plumber’s diary, and everything downstream of that stub waits on it.

Backflow prevention is two obligations, not one

Containment at the boundary. Water Corporation’s Backflow Prevention Policy requires an approved containment device at the boundary of every water service connection, backed by regulations 42 and 43 of the Water Services Regulations 2013. Water Corporation can order you to install one and can restrict or disconnect your supply if you do not. Your risk rating — high, medium or low — is assigned at building approval. High and medium properties get a testable device: tested at commissioning, after any maintenance, and every 12 months by a licensed plumbing contractor, with the report lodged within five working days.

Protection of the irrigation service itself. A containment device does not remove the need for zone and individual protection under the plumbing standards, and Water Corporation does not manage those — they sit with your plumber and the Plumbing Code. Under NCC 2025 table B5D7 a Type C irrigation system is medium hazard for zone protection, and a Type D system, injected with fertilisers, herbicides, nematicides, insecticides or weedicides, is high hazard.

Read that last one twice. A fertiliser injector changes the hazard class of the whole service, and high hazard means a testable device with an annual test forever. Decide about fertigation now, and price both before you fall in love with the idea.

Two more that quietly bite in Perth:

  • Never cross-connect a bore to the scheme supply. A bore pump running above main pressure pushes bore water backwards into the drinking water supply. That is backpressure backflow, exactly what the policy exists to stop. Bore and scheme retic stay on separate pipework.
  • Backflow devices eat pressure. Water Corporation says so directly. The figure you measured in Irrigation 2 predates the device. Re-measure at the stub once the plumber leaves and check your station flows still work.

What a professional does at this stage

They walk the site with the concept plan and the paving setout in hand and route the mainline around every future hard surface before a trench is opened. Not because pipe under paving fails more often — it does not — but because the one time it does, the repair is a demolition job.

Then they sleeve. Every crossing of a future path, driveway, slab or wall gets an oversized conduit — 100 mm stormwater pipe is the usual choice — with a draw string in it, both ends marked with a star picket, before the base goes in. A sleeve costs about $15 now; retrofitting one through a finished driveway costs several hundred and looks like it. They over-provide on everything that cannot be added later: a spare sleeve, two spare cores, one spare station on the controller.

Sizing the mainline

Size the mainline on velocity, not on whether water reaches the far end. The Rain Bird manual’s working limit is 1.5 metres per second. Above that you get friction loss you did not plan for, plus water hammer — the bang when a solenoid shuts and a moving column of water stops in about 50 milliseconds. Water hammer is what splits solvent joints and cracks valve bodies eighteen months after handover.

Indicative maximum flows at 1.5 m/s, using typical internal diameters:

Internal diameter changes with pressure class, so confirm against your supplier’s table. Size for your largest station flow from Irrigation 3, then go up one size if the block is long. Oversized mainline is the cheapest insurance on the job; undersized mainline is a fault you cannot tune out at the controller.

Metric poly with barbed or compression fittings is the Perth domestic default — flexible, forgiving of sand movement, repairable wet. PVC pressure pipe to AS/NZS 1477, solvent-welded, is stiffer and cheaper in larger sizes, but a bad solvent joint is a slow leak you will never find. Either way buy pressure-rated pipe: black poly sold for drainage is not the same product.

Valve boxes

The Rain Bird manual states it flatly — valves installed below ground must be housed in valve boxes and not buried directly in the ground. A buried solenoid is a fault you will excavate a lawn to find.

Group two to four valves on a manifold in one rectangular box, then place it:

  • Not under future paving, decking, a slab or a raised bed, and not in open lawn where the mower scalps the lid. Check the setout, not what is there now.
  • Against a bed edge, beside a downpipe, in the side access — somewhere a person can kneel with a spanner in ten years.
  • Bedded on 100 mm of blue metal, never sand. A box bedded on Perth sand fills within two summers and you will be scooping it out with a jar lid to reach a solenoid. Keep solenoid tops above the gravel line, and put a paver under each valve so the manifold does not sink.

Set the lid flush or 10 mm proud, number it with the stations inside, and coil a 300 mm service loop of cable in the box so a solenoid can be swapped without stretching the wire.

Solenoid wiring

Solenoids run at 24 V AC — below the 50 V AC threshold in the Electricity (Licensing) Regulations 1991, so pulling solenoid cable is not licensed electrical work in WA. The controller’s 240 V supply is another matter: if there is no weatherproof outdoor power point already, a licensed electrical contractor installs it. Power and water in a garden is not where you save $250.

Each valve needs two conductors — its own station wire, and the common, shared by every valve and returned to the controller. Use multi-core direct-burial irrigation cable, not figure-8, not TPS. Holman’s published size guide is 0.5 mm to 50 m, 1.0 mm to 100 m, 1.5 mm to 200 m and 2.0 mm to 400 m; measure the cable route, not the straight line.

Four rules separate a system that lasts from one that does not:

  1. Gel-filled or grease-filled direct-burial connectors only. Holman’s own line is that most field failures come from poor connections. Insulation tape is not a joint. Plain twist connectors are not a joint.
  2. Every joint lives inside a valve box — never a splice loose in a trench.
  3. Pull at least two spare cores and cap them in the furthest box. A broken core with no spare means trenching the whole run again.
  4. Run the cable in the mainline trench, beside the pipe and through the same sleeves. Photograph every trench open, tape measure in shot, before backfilling.

Pick a colour convention — white for common is usual — and record which colour goes to which station.

Digging safely on a block someone else built

Lodge a free Before You Dig Australia enquiry before you open a trench. On a renovation what hurts is the unmarked consumer mains to a shed, the gas service and the NBN lead-in, and plans show approximate positions only — hand-dig to expose anything you cross.

Perth’s other trenching hazard is limestone. Cutting limestone, concrete or pavers dry releases respirable crystalline silica. Cut wet, outdoors and upwind, in a properly fitted P2 respirator, with everyone else clear. Never dry-cut with an angle grinder because it is quicker.

What this feeds into next

It also states plainly that installing a backflow device is plumbing work and that only licensed plumbers qualified to install, test and certify these devices may do it.

It has worked exercises with solutions, which almost no free irrigation resource does.

    American, and dual-unit. Read the metric figures in brackets and ignore the imperial ones. Substitute Australian metric poly and AS/NZS 1477 PVC pressure pipe for the US pipe schedules — the internal diameters differ, so use your supplier's tables for the actual numbers and take only the method from here. It also assumes 117 V or 230 V power and a US electrical code; in WA the 240 V side of the controller is licensed electrical work.

  • In WA, water supply plumbing work is the installation, replacement, alteration, connection, disconnection, repair, testing, commissioning or maintenance of pipes, materials or components used for the supply of water from a water supply system to a point of discharge. For an irrigation service, the point of discharge includes the outlet of the backflow prevention device that the plumbing standards require to connect that service. Everything upstream of that outlet is licensed plumbing work.

  • Electrical work in WA is defined under the Electricity (Licensing) Regulations 1991 as work on an electrical installation, machine, appliance or equipment supplied at a nominal pressure exceeding 50 volts alternating current or 120 volts direct current, and may only be carried out by licensed electrical contractors and electricians. A 24 volt AC solenoid circuit falls below that threshold; a new 240 volt outdoor power point for the controller does not.
